Discussion surrounding children's conduct in public spaces has been hotly contested in recent days following a highly-publicised case in Maine earlier this week.

And while some parents may fear judgement or scorn when their child misbehaves in public, one woman from Raleigh, North Carolina recently learned that empathy and understanding can manifest itself when you least expect it.

Mum-of-three Melissa Wistehuff was eating out with her family while on vacation when her two-year-old son, Ian, did what children have been known to do from time to time - he threw an incredibly loud and disruptive temper tantrum.

Acknowledging that a child's tantrum can often spoil the ambiance in a restaurant, Melissa said: "It can be quite frustrating if you're trying to eat a nice meal and trying to enjoy your vacation and there is a screaming child sitting across from you."

Recalling her experience, Melissa told local news: "He was arching his back and just stiff as a board. He was screaming, crying and kicking."

Having successfully removed her little boy from his high chair, Melissa attempted to calm him down outside the restaurant, all the while feeling like the eyes of the restaurant were upon her.

Certain he had been sufficiently placated, the hassled and embarrassed mum reentered the seafood restaurant, but was dismayed to realise her son had no intention of settling back down.

Carrying his son outside for the second time, Melissa's husband attempted to deal with the escalating situation while his wife decided to settle the bill.

The mum-of-three admits she was astounded to learn that her family's bill had already been covered by fellow patrons who were said to have been impressed with the way in which Melissa and her husband handled the situation.

"They admired us, but I'm sure they felt sorry for us!" she joked.

What a heartwarming story!
