The O' Farrell family from Co. Wexford are celebrating the news that their six-year-old daughter Ciara is finally free from pain after receiving a stem cell transplant from her younger brother Cian.

The transplant which was carried out in Newcastle Hospital in the UK has rid Ciara of the crippling juvenile arthritis she had been suffering from for four years.

Dubbed a 'hero' by his doting parents, four-year-old Cian, who played a vital role in his older sister's recovery, was matter-of-fact about the medical procedure, having said: "The doctor's going to take out my solar system and give it to Ciara."

Ciara, who has lived with a condition which affected every joint in her body from the age of two, is on the road to recovery, with her relived mum Deborah, saying: "Ciara is good, she is well, very happy and full of beans."

Having spent five months in the UK, Ciara is slowly but surely recovering, however she will be required to attend a Dublin hospital every three weeks for the foreseeable future to ensure she does not suffer an infection following the transplant.

Ciara, who hopes to return to school in September, is said to be thriving, with Deborah admitting: "She's in great form now and in remarkable health considering what she's been through."

Praising the staff at Newcastle Hospital, Ciara and Cian's grateful mum said: "They really got behind you when you need them."

We wish the O' Farrell family all the best and congratulate both Ciara and Cian on their incredible bravery.
