A heroic young man whose family lived on the top floor of Grenfell Tower saved his disabled mum’s life when the blaze took hold of the building.

Shekeb Neda, 24, rescued mum Flora, 55, when she collapsed and carried her on his back down 24 flights of stairs.

His dad Mohammed, who is also known as Saber, is feared dead as he stayed behind and no one has heard from him since.

It’s believed Flora who suffers from a muscle disease, is in a coma in hospital while her family attempt to locate her husband.

Shekeb was also in a coma following the fire but according to The Sun, he was awake last night and a family member said he is “improving.”

His relatives paid tribute to the brave young graduate for saving his mum’s life. Shekeb's uncle, Aref, 54, said: "Shekeb needed to get her out quickly. He took her arms, put them around his neck and carried her over his back down all 24 floors."

A family friend Fahim Muzhary, 62, added: "He is a hero. In the chaos, all the screaming and shouting, he picked up his mother and carried her down from the very top floor.”

“He sprinted with her down the stairs the whole way. I just don’t know how he did it. He must have summoned the strength somehow in the moment.

“With all the smoke and the flames it really is unbelievable.”

Another relative, a cousin, said: “Shekeb is the most loving and caring man — a strong young boy who loves his family more than anything.

“He did what any son would do and he got his mother to safety. We do not know where Saber is. We hope he is alive.”

Shekeb and his parents are originally from Afghanistan but have been living in the UK for 14 years.

A friend of the family Peter Martindale said: “They are the most wonderful, kind family. I used to live a few floors below them in that tower. They moved in about 14 years ago.”

The young man had just graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Kingston University and a recent photo of the family shows them attending his graduation ceremony.

So far, 17 people have been confirmed dead after the fire ripped through the 24 storey apartment block in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Many others remain missing and it’s feared the death toll could reach above 100.
