Her recent success on the US reality TV show Dancing With the Stars gave an insight into not only her personal struggles, but also her life as the daughter of two Hollywood legends; now, Rumer Willis has opened up about the life-changing lesson mum Demi Moore taught her.

As an emotional Demi revealed during a series of candid interviews on the dance competition show, Rumer experienced bullying and abuse over her physical looks; something which greatly impacted upon her self-esteem as she was growing up.

No stranger to the spotlight herself however, mum Demi had some wise words for her eldest daughter – which Rumer shared in an interview this weekend.

“I was constantly bullied because of my looks, so I struggled a lot with my body image. I wanted to have no butt; I wanted to have no boobs. For a long time I just wanted to look tiny and androgynous,” said the 26-year-old.

She went on to reveal: “I do remember my mom telling me, ‘There’s always going to be someone who’s a better singer. There’s always going to be someone more fit. There’s always someone who’s going to be, in your mind, better than you – who you’re comparing yourself to. But you can’t do that, because you will live such an unhappy life.’”

Rumer added: “It’s difficult, but the moment you stop saying, ‘I’m really fat’, or ‘I’m ugly’, and just say, ‘Wow, I have this,’ then you’ll see a change.”

As parents, we will have either gone through a similar experience to Demi, or even to Rumer herself, and these are definitely wise words that teens need to be aware of while they’re growing up and finding out their identities.
