Several people had to be rescued and Graignamanagh, Co. Kilkenny, is being described as a ‘warzone’, after Storm Frank raged havoc across the country throughout the night.

According to the Irish Independent, a woman and a child in Co. Cork had to be rescued when the car they were in became trapped in flood waters while another woman and two children were left stranded between floods in Midleton.

Streams and rivers in the area have burst their banks following the torrential rainfall, and the Defence Forces, Cork County Council staff and Midleton Fire Brigade are working together on emergency pumping.

But it’s not just Co. Cork that is feeling the effects of Storm Frank; Sean Keane from Graignamanagh, Co. Kilkenny, described the devastation as a war zone to RTÉ Radio One’s Morning Ireland, saying: "It's like a war zone, the water has destroyed a lot of businesses. Murray's pub is full of water, Doran 's Supervalu is gone... the town is impassable. It's utter devastation here.”

Describing the situation in Co. Westmeath, councillor Kevin Moran has said that up to 150 homes are at risk as they battle to stop the Shannon flood waters.

"We probably had one of the most difficult nights that we have seen in the past three or four weeks," he told the radio station.

"On both sides of the Shannon, the water was surging quite a lot and driving water up to the doors of businesses and houses. At one stage there were 19 men working on the Strand area of Athlone... one pump went on fire.”
