Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow Wind Warning for Galway, Mayo, Clare and Kerry as winds of up to 95kmph are expected.

"From late morning through this afternoon, southerly winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 60 km/hr at times with gusts of 80 to 95 km/hr, strongest in coastal areas," the National Forecaster said.

It came into effect from 10am this morning and will remain in place until 6pm on Friday evening.

Strong gusts of south-westerly winds whipped coastal regions in the west last night, and increased the likelihood of spot flooding, according to the Irish Independent

“Coastal areas will be the worst hit," according to the paper.

Spot flooding has already been reported on secondary roads in the Fermoy, Mallow, Bandon, Macroom, Tralee, Killarney and Kenmare areas and heavy showers are expected to fall this afternoon.

"This afternoon, rain will gradually clear northwards. Heavy showers will follow over the western half of the country with strong, gusty southerly winds, a risk of thunder. Highs of 10 to 12C," according to Met Éireann.

Gardaí also urged motorists to slow down, allow extra braking distance to the vehicle in front and never to enter major floodwaters given the risk of vehicles becoming stalled and stranded.
