Social media seems to have developed far faster than any laws controlling it, which has left people in some sticky situations – like the parents in the following report, from Austria.

An 18-year-old girl has taken her parents to court for breaching her right to privacy – for posting around 500 childhood pictures of her to the social media platform.

The unnamed teen is said to have been humiliated by the photos, which were shared online to hundreds of her parents’ friends. When she asked her mum and dad to remove the photos however, they refused.

The teen waited until she turned 18, then sought a court order compelling her parents to remove the photos. She claims that her parents have breached her right to privacy, and is also seeking financial compensation.

In an interview with national newspaper Heute, the teen said: “They knew no shame and no limits. They didn’t care if I was sitting on the toilet or lying naked in the cot, every moment was photographed and made public.”

Her father, however, is challenging the legal action. He reckons that, as he was the one who took the photos, he should be allowed to do as he pleases with them.

With the case set to go before the courts in November, many are already claiming that a win for the teen will change social media and content sharing as we know it.

Do you think the teen is justified here?
