Most of us look at TV families with their happy smiles and fun activities and wonder: "What exactly is the secret to a happy family?"

However, a recent survey has just answered that very question and there is one surprising result. While we are all told to go enjoy family-fun outdoors, it seems watching TV together actually makes us happy.

A survey of almost 2,000 parents in the UK found that 40% of participants said watching TV programmes as a family made them happy.

But it’s not all about the telly as not arguing in front of the children, living within walking distance of a pub and enjoying Sunday lunch together were also just as important.

Not surprisingly, having a good work life balance was also deemed vital as well as having a garden, with 56% of respondents saying this played a major role in the happiness of their family.

If your little one is always hankering after a dog it might be time to consider adding a furry friend to the household, as 30% admitted that a pet brought happiness to their home.

Surprisingly, having money didn’t feature as a priority for many parents, something which clearly delighted Carol Rhead, worker at restaurant Fayre and Square which carried out the research.

"We were also cheered that nearly a quarter of people disregarded money in the quest for happiness, stating that love is the key."

So looks like we will be watching telly before heading out for lunch this weekend!
