The best man has fairly specific duties at a wedding - embarrass the groom, compliment the bride, and make a witty speech that’s not too long.

Now, we’ve heard horror stories of the best man getting drunk and going overboard with the embarrassment, or making crude jokes; but this best man ruined his friend’s wedding in a completely different way.

This tawdry tale comes courtesy of an anonymous letter sent to Slate’s agony aunt page, Dear Prudence, by the bride.

The bride begins her letter by explaining that she and her husband had a whirlwind romance. "My husband and I started dating, got pregnant, had a child, moved in together, bought a house, and got a dog in that order,” she wrote.

After some time, the couple had saved enough money for a big wedding: “We reached a point where we could afford a huge blowout wedding to celebrate our lives with everyone we know and love.”

Their nuptials cost them a whopping £46K, and they wanted everything to be perfect. The big day arrived, and it seemed like everything would go smoothly.

The new bride said: "The setting was beautiful, everyone seemed happy, our families were overjoyed.”

So far, so good - until the best man, “John” (not his real name), decided to propose to his girlfriend in the middle of the ceremony! But it gets better: John then announced his girlfriend, “Jane” (not her real name), was pregnant!

For some reason, John was also officiating at the wedding, so the bride couldn’t even hear her husband making his vows.

"I couldn't even hear the vows my husband wrote, or the rest of the ceremony over the noise of Jane’s happy sobs, her very surprised family who were also guests, and people seated nearby congratulating her.”

The disgusted bride wrote: "During the reception, John and Jane became the primary focus of our guests. John even went out of his way to ask the band for a special dance for just him and Jane on the dancefloor."

When John did get around to making the speech, he apologised for getting carried away - but then proceeded to talk about his and Jane’s future.

The groom hasn’t spoken to John since, and the bride has asked Prudence if they should cut ties with the groom’s former best friend forever. John and Jane had since attempted to redeem themselves by giving the couple a cheque for half the wedding costs!

Prudence sagely advised that the groom ought to talk to John and tell him “how upset his behaviour during your wedding made him”.

While that’s all very well, we think John and Jane ought to keep an eye out for sabotage on their wedding day…
