Anyone who owns a pet will know that they are so much more than our companions; they are a part of the family, and a special part of our lives.
This is why hearts have broken all over the country, following a Dundalk mum’s open letter to the driver who killed her dog and fled the scene.
Sharon McNamee took to Facebook to relay the devastating story of how her family’s beloved dog, Soskay, died after being knocked down while out on a walk with her 15-year-old daughter, last Wednesday.
Addressing the driver directly, she set the scene, writing: “You came tearing around a corner, proceeded to drive on the wrong side of the road, hit my dog with such force that two female students heard the bang from their back garden and thought a child had been knocked down.”
After realising what had happened, the male driver ‘mumbled sorry’ to Sharon’s daughter and then proceeded to blame her when she was no way in the wrong.
When Sharon’s daughter asked for the driver’s details, he hastily got into his car and fled – leaving the teen and the kind witnesses to bring poor Soskay into the house.
“I’d like to share with you now the aftermath of your reckless, dangerous driving,” wrote Sharon, painting a devastating scene that, unfortunately, her eight-year-old son witnessed.
Admitting that poor Soskay ‘never stood a chance’, Sharon confirmed that the gorgeous dog died on the way to the vet.
“I had left three traumatised children in the house, and then had to go back home and tell them he died,” she added, sombrely.
Sharon went on to vividly capture the heartbreak that followed Soskay’s loss: “After the blood was cleaned up, after we repeatedly reassured our daughter that it was not her fault but yours, after I cleaned myself up and changed my blood-stained clothes, I crawled into my bed, where my eight-year-old son was, and held his hand while he cried himself to sleep.”
The post has struck a real chord with people all over the country and beyond, particularly those who have lost a pet themselves.
While Sharon went on to share an incredibly touching tribute to her beloved Soskay, she saved some very serious words for the driver who fled the scene of the devastation he caused.
Pondering over which cowardly reason was behind his decision, she wrote: “That is your nature, that is your personality; selfish, cruel and inhumane, because you were able to drive away, leaving a 15-year-old girl with a dying dog. You are not entitled to be called a human being, let alone a Man.”
She finished her heart-wrenching post with an appeal for any potential witnesses to come forward.
