You can be coasting along in life without a care in the world, and then suddenly, you’ll receive the news you were never expecting.

This turned out to be the case recently for 74-year-old Ed Flemming, whose life was quite certainly saved – by a special promise he made to his grandson.

Local media outlet KXAN reports that Ed had promised to go skydiving with his grandson when he turned 18, and with the big day looming, Ed visited his doctor to get clearance.

What he was told next came as a total shock: “I took the stress test Friday afternoon and was driving home, and got a call from them saying to turn around and get to the Austin heart hospital as soon as you can.”

It turned out that Ed had five blocked arteries in his heart and urgently needed to undergo open-heart surgery.

Thankfully, the grandfather was able to undergo the procedure three days later; and his surgeon, Dr Brannon Hyde, reckons it saved his life.

“If he had not got the surgery, based on these pictures, we know that his long term survival would not be good. In fact at some point, he would’ve had a major heart attack,” said Dr Hyde.

As for Ed, he’s put the whole thing down to ‘Divine intervention’.
