It may be miserable outside, but the following, heart-warming story is bound to put a smile on your face this morning.

A simple but touching image of a teenager holding the hand of an uncomfortable grandmother on a shopping mall escalator has touched hearts around the world today.

It was Leah Kerr, Carma Greathouse’s granddaughter, who shared the photo on her Facebook page following the encounter.

Explaining how she had been out on a day trip with Carma as well as her own two daughters, she said she didn’t even realise her grandmother’s discomfort until she was at the other end of the escalator.

“Grandma was too scared to get on – I felt horrible as I watched her try again and again to get her footing right. People walked around her, pushed by her or asked her to step aside,” she wrote.

Thankfully, however, one kind young man stepped up to show some compassion; he took her hand and helped her down the escalator.

“Not only was he not ashamed to help her, but he held her hand the entire way down and helped her off. Thank you so, so much to him,” wrote Leah.

Needless to say, the image has become viral. In an age where we are often too engrossed in our own business and lives, it’s comforting to know that simple but powerful acts of kindness still exist.
