One of Ireland’s largest waste companies has confirmed that they will start charging households for green bin recycling from April.

Chief executive of Panda Recycling, Des Crinion explained that this move is necessary as China has banned the recycling of certain types of plastic from Ireland and Europe.

"Unfortunately China had been the biggest taker of recycled material in the world - not just Ireland, but the world.”

"Over the last year, they have indicated that they don't want the world's recycling material anymore, they want to encourage their own recycling. Basically, no plastic is going to China if it's not processed at the moment."

It is understood that thousands of households will pay an average of €21 per year for their green bins.

They hope the green bin fee does not prevent the public from recycling, “We have a fantastic culture of recycling in Ireland, and the last thing we want to do is discourage people to recycle."

Panda shared that homeowners will pay 80 cents per lift.

The company understand that the additional costs are not ideal for many families, however, they have vowed that those fees will not increase for at least five years.

“It's been a very difficult decision to put this charge on to the recycle bin, but it's something we feel we have to do,” Mr Crinion admitted.
