A children’s care centre in Tipperary is said to be failing children with systems that resulted in some boys being harmed, according to the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has found.

The children’s residential centre in Clonmel was subject to unannounced inspections in August and September and it was found that there were serious risks identified in four areas; the care of young people, safeguarding and child protection, premises and safety, and management and staffing.

The Ferryhouse residential centre units provide care for up to 15 boys, aged between 12 and 16, and also offer on-site schooling, a sports complex and sports grounds.

HIQA says that in the last year the centre has put some children in serious harm.

Child protection review meetings are now to be carried out four times a year at the centre with monitoring officer doing monthly visits.
