A toddler is due to be taken into the custody of the LA County Department of Children and Family Services following a devastating incident in his family home this week.

According to the LA Times, the two-year-old boy was forced to fend for himself after his mother, Erika Tomassian, suffered a medical emergency and died while feeding her other child.

Tragically, the toddler's younger sibling choked to death while sitting in his high chair after his mother, who had recently been diagnosed with bronchitis, passed away as a result of breathing difficulties.

Having been contacted by a concerned friend of the family, police and firefighters accessed the second-floor apartment in Los Angeles where they discovered the body of the woman and her one-year-old son.

While the deceased's two-year-old son had survived the heartbreaking ordeal by feeding himself, officials have confirmed that the child was suffering from severe dehydration upon discovery.

Commenting on the family tragedy, Lieutenant John Jenal paid tribute to the children's mother, saying: "She was loving them and trying to take care of them and suffered this medical emergency."

It has been established that Ms. Tomassian's two-year-old son is in a stable but critical condition in hospital.
