Today, our hearts are with a grieving mother whose baby passed away after a tragic elevator shaft accident, in New York.

The harrowing incident took place on Thursday, in an apartment building in Brooklyn.

The mother is said to have been waiting for the lift to arrive at the 23rd floor, with her baby daughter in her buggy.

When the lift did arrive however, and the doors opened, there was no elevator car inside. Out of instinct, the mother pushed her baby’s buggy forward into the void space.

The child, who was just six weeks old, is said to have fallen eight storeys on to the elevator car below, on the 15th floor.

A mechanic working in the building is reported to have been alerted by the mother’s screams, and managed to come to her rescue.

Emergency services were immediately contacted, and both the mother and her child were rushed to nearby Coney Island Hospital for treatment.

Tragically, the baby girl did not survive the ordeal.

While the building's elevator system is said to have passed a safety inspection in January, it was the first time in five years that such an inspection had been carried out.

Amid claims that numerous complaints had been lodged about the elevators in the building, a full investigation has been launched by authorities.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and their loved ones.

SHARE to gather well wishes for the family.
