Tragedy has struck this week for a New York family, after their four-month-old child passed away during his first day at an unlicensed day care facility in the city.

According to authorities this afternoon, day care workers put Karl Towndrow down for a nap on Monday afternoon, and found him unresponsive upon their return, just after his mother had arrived for a visit.

Both staff and emergency medical technicians attempted to resuscitate the baby, but he was sadly later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

It has since emerged that the day care centre in question was not licensed, and a joint investigation into the tragic incident has now been launched by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services along with the New York City Health Department.

A statement released by authorities read: “We are saddened and concerned about this infant death, and we are working closely with law enforcement and ACS on an investigation.”

Meanwhile, in a statement, Karl’s devastated parents have paid tribute to their son: “Karl’s parents appreciate the kind words and condolences they have received. He was full of love and was treasured by all that met him. At this time, his parents ask for privacy as they grieve his short, wonderful life.”
