The first goal of treatment is to return the young person to normal weight and eating habits. Hospitalisation, sometimes for weeks, may be needed. In cases of severe or life-threatening malnutrition, intravenous or tube feeding may be required. A long term treatment plan will also be devised to address underlying psychological issues. Treatments include:
  • Antidepressant medication
  • Behavioural therapy
  • Psychotherapy
  • Support groups
