Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Irish Times sports journalist Carl O’Malley, who sadly passed away on Thursday night.

In an article published on the Irish Times this evening, it is reported that father-of-three Carl took ill during a five-a-side soccer game and was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital where he tragically passed away. He was 37 years of age.

The news is all the more devastating as it has emerged that Carl was on paternity leave this week, following the birth of his third child, Leo, just seven days ago.

He is survived by his wife Moira and their three children Charlie (six), Arwen (three) and newborn Leo.

Paying tribute to Carl, Irish Times sports editor Malachy Logan wrote: “Carl was a key figure in the Irish Times sports department. His instinct for a story, writing ability and technical knowledge were key components for the Irish Times as it developed its sports coverage in print and online.”

“An outstanding colleague, his loss is such a shock. He will be so badly missed by everyone in the paper,” he added.

Carl is credited as being one of the first online sports journalists in Ireland, starting his career in ireland.com, beforegoing on to play a key role with the Irish Times.

A minute’s silence was held in tribute to Carl at the launch of the Airtricity League season this morning.

Our hearts go out to his family, friends and colleagues at this incredibly sad time.
