Like most women, Kelsey Carder would prefer not to have her photo taken while she is wearing tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt around the house. However, when her husband snapped an “unflattering” photo of her and her son, she couldn’t help but smile.

Kelsey was straightening her hair in the bathroom, and her toddler son Kane was mimicking her by pretending to straighten his with a travel straightener.

Kelsey posted the sweet snap to the popular Facebook page Love What Matters, explaining why it meant so much to her.

“Tonight, my husband showed me a picture he took of Kane and I a few days ago without my knowledge. Kane is my shadow all day long. He does everything I do - including pretending to straighten his hair with my mini travel straightener.

“As unflattering as this picture may be... I love it. You can take a million perfect selfies, but the pictures your kids will appreciate when they are older, are ones like this. The pictures I WILL appreciate when my kids are grown are the ones like this. The ones that hold precious memories.”

She urged other dads to take photos of their families more often so that they could enjoy precious memories like these.

“To all the dads out there reading this... Take more pictures! The love of your life and mother of your children is always the one behind the camera, trying to make everything perfect. So take more pictures of HER.

“The moments when she's on the floor playing with your kids, making a mess in the kitchen, or is soaking wet giving them a bath. Unplanned, but perfectly imperfect. Because those are the ones she will cherish forever."

Other mums commented below, admitting that - like Kelsey - some of their favourite family photos were ones that were unplanned and unflattering, yet they loved them all the same.

One mum shared a precious photo of herself with her newborn, writing: “Snap! I was out the shower. Hair scraped back and chins everywhere. But I was so exhausted after spending 13 days in hospital with my little one, I lay and fell asleep with her. Glad my husband took this.”

While another said: “I never liked my picture being taken. Then it hit me a couple of years ago, when I am gone, my kids aren't going to want all the pictures to be just of them, they need something to show their children and grandchildren. Since then, I don't care if I get my picture taken.”

We think it’s an adorable photo, and there’s a great message behind it! What do you think, mums?
