The whole country was in a state of shock when a newborn baby was found abandoned on the side of the road in May.

Doctors believed the youngster, who was discovered by a passer-by, was between 24 and 36 hours old at the time, and the gardai launched a huge campaign to find her mum.

The four-month-old's mother has yet to be found, but thankfully she is said to be “thriving”. However, she will remain in care until she is 18 as under law only a biological parent can sign adoption papers.

Baby Maria was wrapped in a fleece blanket and a bin liner and placed in a Marks and Spencer bag when she was found near Rathcoole, Co. Dublin on Friday, 8th May.

Efforts to find the youngster’s mum were in vein, and investigating officers at Clondalkin Garda Station are appealing once again to the mother or father to contact the station or anyone who may have information.

"We have still not located baby Maria's mother and we would appeal again for her mother or father or anyone else who may know anything to contact the gardaí," a garda source said.

Concerned about the mother’s welfare and adding that she has nothing to fear, the source continued: "We are concerned for her well-being and understand that she may still be traumatised and afraid."

"We are conscious that she may require medical and psychological support - any help she needs will be provided."
