There is controversy this morning surrounding a newly released cover of the children’s classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.

The new cover shows a young girl, thought to be a depiction of Veruca Salt, sitting on a woman’s knee with a full face of make-up, groomed hair and a feather boa. There is a blank expression on the child’s face.

The image has caused trouble on Twitter where it has been slammed as “creepy” and “sexualised.”

The book is a 50th anniversary edition and was released by Penguin Modern Classic.

Author of Chocolat, Joanne Harris, openly spoke of her disgust at the cover on Twitter, saying: “I’m not sure why adults need a different cover anyway, but who was it who decided that ‘adult’ meant ‘inappropriately sexualised’? ... Seriously, Penguin Books. Why not just get Rolf Harris to design the next one?”

Do you think the cover for the edition is inappropriate?
