When Roger and Maureen Freestone’s home went on fire in March, Roger refused to leave his bed-bound wife.

An inquest has heard that Roger “had an opportunity to escape” from the couple’s home in Cambridgeshire after the fire began but decided to stay by his wife’s bedside where the couple later died.

The coroner came to a verdict of accidental death saying that Roger’s actions were “a testament to his utter devotion to his wife.”

Two of Maureen’s carers were able to escape the fire although one suffered burns to the face and arms in their effort to control the blaze.

It is thought that a box caught fire and Roger tried to move it causing the curtains to go up in flames blocking the couple’s exit from their home.

“The way that they died together just shows you what a fine couple they were and how much they were in love,” a close friend of the couple, told ITV News.
