A parent will carry around the heartbreak of losing a child forever, but there has to be some small comfort in knowing that their little one’s life has saved another’s.
This is the thinking of Heather Clark, a mother whose story has captured the hearts and minds of their entire internet this week.
Heather lost her son Lukas when he was just seven months old, after he was abused by the boyfriend of a once trusted babysitter. When Lukas lost his life, a grieving Heather decided to donate his organs, in order to use his short and precious life to save another.
The recipient of Lukas’ heart was Jordan Drake, a little girl who was born with a congenital heart defect, and the incredible gesture saved her life.
For the first time, last weekend, Heather met with Jordan and her mother, to listen to her late son’s heart beating again – and the moment, which was captured on video, has already become one of the most powerful of this year.
Before meeting little Jordan, Heather is asked what it means to be about to hear her son’s heart beat again; her response - “It means everything”. When you see her reaction after placing the stethoscope to the little girl’s chest, you will realise that her reply could not have been more apt.
