Voting has commenced on whether or not to repeal the eighth amendment.

 

The first people to cast their vote on the referendum will do today. 

 

The residents on the islands off the west coast will be the first people in the country to have their say.

 

The rest of the country will take to the polls tomorrow morning.

 

 

Broadcast campaigning on both sides will draw to a close at 2 pm today.

 

The radio silence will come into effect this afternoon under the broadcast moratorium regulations.

 

This means radio and television outlets are prohibited to cover news stories and breaking news stories, that could sway or manipulate voters' decisions.

 

 

Broadcasting basic facts are allowed.

 

This included details such as hours at which polls are open and turnout figures.

 

The regulations are only for broadcast media.

 

The rules do not apply to print newspapers or online outlets. 

 

 

Tomorrow's historic vote will decide if abortion should be legislated in the Republic of Ireland. 

 

Voters have been reminded to leave any representation of how you're going to vote, at home. 

 

These include any items of clothing, badges or bags.
