The Government has revealed that the billing of water charges is set to be suspended from next Friday, July 1st.

According to the Irish Times, Minster for Local Government Simon Coveney confirmed the move today, following the introduction of new legislation in the Dáil.

Under the Water Services (Amendment) Bill, the bills will be suspended for nine months, with an entirely new framework due to be put in place to manage the charges after.

Minister Coveney revealed that an external advisory board for Irish Water will be established before the end of the year. The board will advise the Government and the Oireachtas committee regarding Irish Water’s performance.

The Minister was keen to clarify that the forthcoming suspension of bills will not have any impact on customers’ existing arrears from bills already distributed.

While Minister Coveney insisted that he was hopeful of the future of Irish Water and the water charging system, Fianna Fáil spokesman Barry Cowen reportedly condemned the system as having utterly failed.
