Looking for something to watch with the family on this dreary Wednesday evening?

There are some great shows on the telly tonight.

So, be sure to pick up some buttery popcorn and sweet treats in preparation for a relaxing, midweek night at home.

In honour of Pope Francis’ upcoming visit, there will be some pope-themed programmes in the evening line-up.

Tonight, former Irish President Mary McAleese will be starring in a must-see feature on RTE - “Mary McAleese's Modern Family”.

Mary travels all over the country and speaks with different families about the evolution of Irish lifestyle in association with Catholicism.

She “charts the changes that have occurred in the Irish family and in our relationship with the Catholic Church since the last historic papal visit.”

Pope John Paul II visited Ireland in September 1979, turning out crowds of almost 2.7 million people.

In this program, the former president will give us an inside look at how the typical Irish family has changed in almost 40 years time.

“In today’s Ireland, Mary McAleese encounters a hugely diverse spectrum of families, from whose experiences, supportiveness, compassion, love and tolerance she believes the Catholic Church could learn a lot,” RTÉ describes.

Following Mary McAleese’s presentation, will be “The Whole World in his Hands” at 10.00pm on TG4.

This show will look back at the visit of Pope John Paul II as prominent public figures recall the experience first-hand.

The program will feature the recollections of Irish influencers such as President Michael D Higgins, Bishop Eamon Casey and Nell McCafferty, discussing their memories of the visit and how much Ireland has changed since then.

Also on tonight is “The Lenny Henry Birthday Show”, looking back at the legendary comedian's career, on BBC One at 8pm.

The telly line-up will then switch to a more serious tone after the kids’ bedtime, featuring "Horizon: Stopping Male Suicide" on BBC Two at 9pm.

The program will examine why suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK.

So, make sure to settle in and get ready for a pope-filled evening with some interesting insights into the modern-day family.
