Every child has a different hero. For some, it's their mum and dad while for others it can be famous people, sports stars and even someone in their local community.

Every year, the People of the Year Awards gives every Irish person a chance to nominate their hero and acknowledge the work they have done for the people of this country.

Heroes include celebrities, sports stars, writers and unsung heroes - ordinary people making an extraordinary difference to society.

Everyone has a different hero - for the children in the video below, heros range from Joe Duffy to Nelson Mandela and Brian O’Driscoll to Roald Dahl.

And, for each child, a hero means something different. From them doing good things to inspiring others, there are so many ways to consider someone as being a hero.

But a hero doesn’t need to be famous, and for one child in the video her hero is her very own school principal.

The People of the Year Awards, organised by Rehab, takes place on Saturday, 6th December 2014 and is a great way for the Irish public to nominate people they feel have made a real difference to the nation.

The Awards have been going since 1975 and previous winners include Katie Taylor who won Sports Person of the Year in 2012 and Loretta Brennan Glucksman who won International Person of the Year Award last year.

Nominations are open until Friday, 12th September, so go to the People of the Year Awards website and let your little one nominate who they believe deserves the award.
