As the first day of the new year, it's only natural that we mark it as the time to begin our resolutions and kick-start our major life changes. However, just because it lands on the figures 01-01, doesn't mean it's the best day to go making drastic changes; here are a few reasons why:

You're still recovering from the New Year's celebrations
No matter how you celebrated the night, the chances are that some recovery is needed in the form of sleep, relaxation or salty food. Tiredness, hunger and a hanging for the leftover chocolates will not equip you with the will power needed to break a habit or start a fresh approach to your daily life.

Technically, you're still on holidays
We look forward to this precious time off all year long, and so we need to make the most of these extra days off while we can. Recharging your batteries and enjoying the down-time you have left will make you extra motivated to achieve your new goals. There's no need to rush into your resolutions; you have 360-odd days to do so.

You need time to psyche yourself up
The chances are that you have spent much of December run off your feet, shopping, preparing and celebrating in the name of Christmas and New Year. Jumping straight into your resolutions without planning or psyching yourself up will leave you unprepared and, ultimately, less likely to stick to your resolutions.

There's far too much temptation around
It's still very much the holiday season - you haven't even hit Women's Little Christmas, for heaven's sake! This means that there is still far too much temptation to break your resolutions - leftover chocolates and rich food will hamper your healthy eating plans, and when you see the kids sitting down for a Netlfix binge, that first exercise session will be the last thing you want to do. Don't make it hard on yourself - ease yourself in, and do it when the time is right.

Your routine is all over the place
Speaking of which, the best time to start afresh and get into a new habit is when you're back into your daily routine. You don't have work, the school run, or homework to contend with on New Year's Day, which means that anything you start today will likely have to be changed or tweaked. Starting when you're back to your routine will allow you to fit your resolution seamlessly into your life, which will give you a much better chance of succeeding.

So, relax and soak up the rest of the holidays!
