We all know that with pregnancy comes a number of aches and pains, including back ache and headaches, but the last thing many of us would expect to hear if we weren't feeling well is the word cancer. But sadly this is what happened to Sharon Wilson when she was expecting her first baby.

The now 44-year-old had been diagnosed with a non-cancerous optic tumour in her eye four years previous, and while she had received treatment for it her eye worsened during her pregnancy.

When she underwent a number of tests, Sharon was delivered the heartbreaking news that it was cancerous – pregnancy hormones had given it a growth spurt. Sadly, while recovery from successful treatment she was also diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

Talking to Gazette Live, the mum-of-one said: “It was hard but I feel like I really want to make a difference now. It has given me a very different perspective on life - a better one. I treasure every moment.”

Giving birth to her son Finlay prematurely she underwent TomoTherapy treatment in 2009 for seven weeks, and while the tumour stopped growing she lost the sight in her right eye.

Sharon now plans on zip-lining across the river Tees in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Talking about the challenge, she told the paper:  “I am excited but a little nervous. I have no idea what to expect but I am scared of heights. Having a Macmillan nurse is like having someone to lean on. It is like a lifeline knowing that they are there. They do a job that you can’t put a price on. You don’t know what is around the corner.”

We wish her the best of luck.
