It’s a story that has surfaced time and time again, in many different variations, so you would think by now that members of the public would have learned to familiarise themselves with all of the details before judging someone for parking in a disabled spot.

A US woman was reduced to tears this week, after a stranger left a note shaming her for parking in a space reserved for those with a disability.

Cameron McMillin took to Facebook to share a photo of the note she found on her car, addressed to her and a friend. It read: “Ladies, it appears that you are both able-bodied. It’s disappointing to see the misuse of that disabled placard here at Rocklin Elementary. Please reserve this spot for those who are truly less fortunate than you. Thank you.”

What this ill-informed person didn’t know, however, is that Cameron actually suffers from a condition called Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome – and she has every right to use that placard and spot.

Responding in a Facebook post, Cameron wrote: “Today you made me cry, but that’s okay. I’d like to take this time to inform you about a medical condition that I have called Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome. It is a connective tissue condition that causes pain in my joints, muscles, and all throughout my body, dislocated hips, knees, ankles and ribs, heart palpitations, organ problems, multiple surgeries, and many more.”

Urging this stranger not to make a ‘snap judgement’ like this again, Cameron added: “Next time, please get to know a person before you make a comment like this.”
