Determined to turn the scars of a tremendously negative experience into a symbol of hope and positivity, one tattoo artist from Brazil has decided to offer free tattoos to victims of domestic violence.

Flavia Carvalho felt compelled to help two years ago after using her tattoo gun to cover a scar on a client who had found herself the victim of a stabbing incident.

Realising the impact her designs could have on a woman's confidence, Flavia decided to offer further victims of abuse free tattoos if they thought it would help them to heal and overcome their traumatic experience.

Speaking to the Huffington Post, Flavia explained the concept behind her mission, A Pele da Flor meaning The Skin of the Flower, saying: "I was suddenly struck by the idea of providing free tattoos to women who were left with scars following domestic violence or mastectomies."

Flavia spread awareness of the initiative by sharing images of her clients' tattoos and the story behind them on Facebook, explaining that the majority of her clients suffered extreme violence at the hands of their boyfriends or husbands.

Explaining the impact the tattoos have on these women, Flavia said: "It is wonderful to see how [the women's] relationship with their bodies changes after they get the tattoos."

While Flavia acknowledges the positive effect her charitable endeavour has had on numerous women, the tattoo artist understandably wishes her services weren't needed.

Opening up about her mission, Flavia said: "It is a grain of sand; the world is full of things that need to be addressed. We have a long way to go regarding protecting women against violence."

It appears Flavia's clients aren't the only ones touched by the initiative, with Flavia herself admitting: "The sense of affection, sisterhood and camaraderie is deeper than I ever imagined."

Incredible!
