According to emerging reports, women and children have been permitted to leave an EgyptAir aircraft after it was hijacked by a passenger while flying from Alexandria to Cairo.

It has been established that upon making an emergency landing at Lanarca International Airport in Cyprus, some of the women and children on board were permitted to disembark the carrier.

Flight MS181. which was carrying 81 passengers, was flying its regular route to the Egyptian city when the hijacking took place.

Taking to social media to raise awareness of the incident, SgyptAir tweeted: "Our flight MS181 is officially hijacked. We'll publish an official statement now.

According to Sky News, all but four passengers and crew have been allowed to leave the aircraft, with the airline confirming: "The negotiations with the hijacker have resulted in the release of all the plane passengers with the exception of the crew and five (now four) foreigners."
