While politicians tend to roll out statistics when it comes to live debates, it’s the personal accounts and stories that make the most impact.

This was proven during last night’s episode of BBC’s Question Time, during which a working mum broke down over the hardship she endures on a daily basis.

In an emotionally-charged speech to Britain's Energy Minister Amber Rudd, the woman said: “I voted Conservative originally because I thought you would be the better chance for me and my children. You’re about to cut tax credits after promising you wouldn’t.”

“I work bloody hard for my money to provide for my children, to give them everything they’ve got. And you’re going to take it away from me and them. I can hardly afford the rent I have to pay. I can hardly afford the bills I’ve got to do, and you’re going to take more from me,” she added, becoming visibly upset.

Minister Rudd was clearly taken by surprise, and she appeared speechless as another audience member was heard shouting, “Shame on you!”

There has been an outpouring of empathy from people all over the country, making it clear that this woman is not alone in her plight.
