We've had a lot of sad news to share with you this weekend, so here's a story that might cheer you up just a little. According to new research, eating cheese is actually really good for you!

The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, has linked our favourite food to better heart health.

According to the research, carried out by a team at the University of Copenhagen, eating cheese in moderation can lead to a lower risk of developing heart disease.

So, what makes cheese so good for us? Well, it all comes down to the magic combination of calcium, protein and vitamin B12.

But what about all of that salt, we hear you say. Well, researchers behind this brand-new study were able to dismiss any link between consumption of cheese (again, moderate!) and hypertension, also known as high blood pressure - usually affected by high levels of salt in the diet.

OK, but we have to address the high concentration of saturated fat, then, don't we? Well, it seems as though maybe things weren't as bad on that front as we have been told all along.

According to one of the study authors, Professor Arne Astrup, the high calcium content in cheese can actually have a 'protective' effect on the digestibility of these fats.

"There's a lot of magic in the food matrix of cheese, and the other components and ingredients in cheese are far more important than the saturated fat and sodium," explained Prof Astrup.

"Calcium seems to play a protective role by binding some of the fatty acids in cheese so that they can't be digested."

So, there you have it, mums - perhaps cheese isn't the enemy after all!

Now, clearly the operative word here is 'moderation' - it probably isn't in our best interests to devour a 16-inch pizza for dinner every night! However, this new research definitely takes a little of the guilt out of tucking into that piece of Gouda!

Be sure to share this with a fellow cheese-lover - they'll thank you for it.
