It is important you take care of yourself during your pregnancy not just for your baby but for you as well. However, just because you are expecting doesn’t mean deadlines don’t need to be met, older children won’t need to be minded or the house doesn’t need to be cleaned, so it’s easy to put yourself on the back burner.

Here are five simple ways to feel good for the next 40 weeks:

Watch what you eat
Make sure you eat a proper healthy diet, keeping the amount of sugar-rich foods you consume to a minimum. Eat a diet full of whole grains, fish, eggs, berries and fortified cereals to help with baby’s development, ensure you get the recommended daily fibre and iron intake, and plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Relax
You need to take time out of your day to relax and take it easy. Call in family favours, ask your significant other to take some of the load off or get friends to help out and make time for you. Take up a prenatal yoga class to help you unwind, enjoy a long soak in the bath once a week or simply go out for a walk.

Have fun
Pregnancy is not all about watching your diet, making sacrifices, or feeling sick or exhausted for most of the day, you can still have a bit of fun as well. This could be anything from going out for dinner with the girls, enjoying a family lunch, going to the cinema or a play or even taking a little holiday. Whatever you enjoy doing, keep doing it.

Stay hydrated
Make sure you avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids every day – at least 2.2 litres a day. This will help you feel energised, better able to concentrate and less likely to feel constipated. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

Sleep, sleep, sleep
Make sure you are getting adequate sleep to keep you fit and healthy. During the first trimester especially, you are going to feel extremely tired and while you will be more energised in the second, you won’t be that way for long. Try to get at least eight to nine hours a night and if you are suffering from insomnia or are finding it a struggle to sleep take a nap during the day.
