We might think we're hotwired to spot a bargain at 50 paces, but we'd be lying if we said we didn't fall a little short of the mark sometimes.

From stocking up on special offer fruit only to watch it wilt, to snapping up an extra loaf only to see it go stale, we've all fallen victim to the supermarket bargain hunt.

And while we may dismiss it as a momentary lapse in concentration during the weekly shop, food wastage has, for many of us, become part and parcel of family life, with the average Irish family wasting a staggering €700 per year on unwanted food.

If you find yourself throwing away just as much food as packaging in the kitchen bin, it's time to consider the following tips and tricks to safeguard against further food and financial foul-ups.

1. Do not go shopping when you're hungry

Let's face it, it's easier to concentrate and make rational choices if you're not grappling with gnawing hunger pangs, so be sure to tuck in before you grab that trolley.

2. The use-by date is as important as the price tag

It may only cost €1.99, but if it goes off before you even unload the trolley, it's not much good to anyone.

3. Be realistic at this time of year

Will Yuletide guests really want three helpings of sausage rolls or are you over-thinking the 'hostess with the mostess' concept?

4. Snap before you shop

In the run-up to Christmas, most of us have trouble remembering our own names, so be sure to snap a picture of your fridge interior so your mind doesn't play tricks on you during the weekly shop.

5. Consider your storage

You might think bulk-buying saves you money in the long run, but if your freezer is already packed to capacity, you're literally throwing your money away.
