Kids this age are just beginning to carve out an identity for themselves but they also feel tremendous pressure to be a part of a group. This feeling of being pushed and pulled coupled with the range of emotions caused by hormones can cause some serious theatrics, especially from girls.

So, what do you do? Pick your battles and talk everything out calmly. Ask your child: “Can you help me to understand what is wrong/ why you did this? Anything you say is ok.” The aim is to start a conversation about what is bothering her and keep it going. Show her empathy and help her make sense of the situation. There will naturally be times when she slams her door, cries and refuses to listen to you. In situations like this it’s best to walk away and wait until she has calmed down to talk to her.
