It has been a week of tragedy and devastation in Italy, following the chaos of the earthquakes in Amatrice, and yet another heart-wrenching story has emerged this week.

Emergency services have revealed that a heroic eight-year-old girl died to save the life of her little sister in the ‘quake, in Pescara del Tronto.

Giulia Rinaldi, who shared a bedroom with four-year-old Giorgia, is said to have thrown her body across her little sister and wrapped her arms around her as their house began to crumble. The sisters remained like that, in the rubble of their former home, for some 16 hours.

When emergency services finally found the pair, they were still ‘locked in an embrace’. While Giulia had died, little Giorgia escaped the disaster unharmed.

Giorgia is now recovering in hospital with her parents. The tot’s father is being treated for a broken leg, while her mother has several broken ribs as well as internal injuries.

Speaking to local media, the girls’ aunt, Francesca Sirianni said: “The firemen told us that when they found them, Giulia was lying on top of her little sister and had given her life to protect her.”

This sad story comes from the same village where a 10-year-old schoolgirl was pulled alive from rubble, after 17 hours.

We’re thinking of all those affected by this horrific natural disaster.
