Social media plays a huge role in our daily lives, and for one family it has brought them under intense scrutiny this week.

A mother who turned to Facebook to try and find an adoptive family for a four-year-old girl has raised widespread concern around the world.

Mallory Donath, who is a 24-year-old mother-of-three took to an online mothers’ group to post the following message:

“I need help. Does anyone know a family who would like to adopt a 4 year old girl? My parents adopted her but got new jobs and they have no time for her. I have 3 kids of my own and can not handle another. Serious inquiries only.”

The post has gone viral since being shared by TV network KWWL, and has sparked major concern for the wellbeing of this little girl.

Australian publication Mother and Baby reported how police in the family’s native Iowa received “several calls” from concerned social media users regarding the post.

Donath went on to post another message ‘clarifying’ that she was not trying to ‘sell’ the child but ‘find adoption ideas’.

Police went on to confirm: “She had no intention of selling the child or giving the child away herself, and obviously she wouldn’t legally have been able to do that anyway since it wasn’t her child.”

While the ‘misunderstanding’ has been cleared up, a local child health services representative has vowed to help the family out in any way that she can.
