According to a recent study, women who exercise regularly during pregnancy are less likely to develop gestational diabetes in comparison to their less active counterparts.

The condition, which is a common complication during pregnancy, affects almost one-fifth of expectant women, but is most common in women who have been categorised as obese.

The study focused on the exercise patterns of pregnant women and determined that those who worked out while expecting reduced their risk of gestational diabetes by more than 30%.

According to researchers, women who combined toning and flexibility exercises with strength and aerobic sessions were most likely to avoid developing the condition.

The study, which involved more than 2,800 women and was conducted in 13 trials, also established that children born to mothers with gestational diabetes were more likely to suffer from weight and health problems in later life.
