Two family dogs killed a three-day old baby after her mother left her unattended on a sofa for a period of time she later described as "mere seconds".

The shocking incident, which took place in Fresno in central California, occurred when her mother left a back door open because of the June heat.

The baby was pronounced dead in hospital a short time after being transferred there.

Fresno Police Sergeant Dan Macias told the Fresno Bee that the newborn's 33-year-old mother had thought the dogs were tied up in the back yard.

He added that the two male dogs, believed to be a mix of shar-pei and pitbull, are owned by the dead child's uncle. One of the animals was known to be "aggressive," local media reports.

The dogs have already been surrendered to the Central California Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and will be destroyed.

Mr Macias said police are continuing to investigate and charges have not been ruled out.
