Norovirus is more commonly known as the winter vomiting bug. It is the most common stomach bug in Ireland and affects people of all ages.
The virus is highly contagious and causes vomiting and diarrhoea. There is no specific cure, so it has to be left to run its course though it shouldn’t last more than a couple of days.
If you or your child should get norovirus, it’s important to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and practice good hygiene to prevent spreading.
Between 10,000 and 20,000 people per week in Ireland can catch norovirus in a peak period . You may have heard of it as the "winter vomiting bug" because the illness is more common in winter. However, the virus can be caught at any time of the year.
