For many women, the first trimester is full of fatigue, sickness and anxiety, which are all made worse when you still have to go to work. However, just because you are pregnant it doesn’t mean you have to give up or even change your daily routine too much.

With a little forward planning and preparation you should be able to get through the first trimester at work without any problems.

1. Dealing with sickness

While being pregnant shouldn’t stop you from going to work or doing your daily activities, there are aspects of it that can be a little debilitating, particularly in the early weeks.

Nausea:

  • Sit as close to the bathroom as possible
  • Keep a window open to ensure fresh air is always flowing
  • Always have a supply of mouthwash and chewing gum
  • Pack a bag of dry snacks for when you can’t face lunch

Exhaustion:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Go for a walk every hour to stretch and release any stiffness
  • Take a nap during your lunch break
  • Ask if you can start later or earlier and make up the hours

Heartburn:

  • Have a supply of milk in the fridge
  • Drink peppermint tea
  • Suck on an over-the-counter antacid

2. Work wear

Save yourself a lot of hassle in the morning by getting your clothes ready the night before. And, if possible, have a work wear wardrobe that will grow with you as your bump grows.

3. Telling people

While it is entirely up to you when you do tell people, out of respect for your employer, it is important you tell them before you start to show. You don’t need to let the rest of the office know at that point but the last thing you want is for your manager to call you up and ask you.

4. Discussing maternity leave

Before you talk to your boss about maternity leave make sure you know exactly when you will be finishing up and if you are returning. However, if you still haven’t decided whether you will be returning or not don't worry too much about it and take your leave as planned. Do be aware of the company’s policy on maternity leave as well; some employers will pay your full salary, others only pay a top and some don’t pay anything at all.
