There are a number of things that we, as mothers, need to teach our sons and daughters from the moment they are born, but there are just as many that dads need to teach their children.

With Father’s Day approaching, we thought it only fitting to list the ten things dads should be teaching their sons.

While not exhaustive, we thought they could get started with the following:

1. To bake/ cook

Gone are the days of women being the only person who cooks in the house – it's creative, fun and not something that they want to miss out on!

2. To be loving

Nothing comes from meanness – being loving and sensitive doesn’t make you any less of a man; it makes you human.

3. To read books

Books help to expand the mind – remember, readers create leaders.

4. To work hard

Nothing comes by being lazy, hard work is both fulfilling and satisfying.

5. To take nothing for granted

Nothing is certain – grades, jobs and even love aren't a given, so it is important to never assume they are.

6. To treat everybody equally

Men and women, no matter race, colour, class or education, should be treated equally – nobody is better than another.

7. To always follow through

Your son needs to know that if they are going to do something to make sure they do it. Nobody likes a person who lies or says one thing and means another.

8. Dream big

Never be afraid to dream big; the bigger the dreams, the bigger the reward

9. To never be afraid to say yes or no

Saying no to things you don’t want to do doesn't make you a wimp or a failure - it makes you strong. But don’t forget to say yes every once in awhile - the world is full of possibilities waiting to be explored.

10. To play an instrument

Or to learn how to play one together.
