According to emerging police reports, a 13-year-old girl has been arrested in connection with the death of a 42-year-old man in Basildon, Essex.

It is understood that Darren Kelly, who worked as a lorry driver, died after confronting a gang who then attacked him in a playground near his home.

Following the attack, the father-of-one is said to have stumbled into a tower block near his home in Voysey Garden, Basildon before being helped by 56-year-old resident Carole Crisp.

Recalling the moment she encountered Mr. Kelly, Carole said: "He managed to get to our block and was just randomly pressing the buzzers for help."

"When I answered he said "Help me I've been stabbed". I rushed down with the woman who lives below me who is a paramedic," she explained.

Mr. Kelly's injuries horrified Carole, who said: "We did what we could, but he was in a very bad way. It was horrific, there was blood everywhere."

"He was covered in blood and there was a trail of blood along the street. I've lived here 15 years and never known anything like this," she told reporters.

It is understood that in addition to the 13-year-old girl, four other individuals have been arrested in connection with Mr. Kelly's death including a 15-year-old girl, 16-year-old boy, 17-year-old boy and 20-year- old man.

Appealing to the public for help with their investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Simon Werrett said: "This happened in a residential area so people would have been about."

A postmortem confirmed that Mr. Kelly died as a result of multiple stab wounds and blood loss.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this devastating time.
