Movies are a great way to get lost in another reality or switch off from any stresses you may be facing in your life.
Letting children enjoy an array of films allows them to learn about other people while absorbing new information to inspire their imagination.
Even though movies are a great way to step away from everyday life, some films have really valuable life lessons that are important to teach our children. Rather than lecturing them about these lessons, sitting down in front of the TV together is a much more enjoyable way for younger members of the family to understand.
To help, we’ve shared 5 of our favourite children’s movies that have important life lessons below.
Inside Out
This 2015 movie is a wonderful way to teach children about their emotions and how to handle them. The film shows how different people experience different emotions and that it’s okay to embrace them as long as we do so appropriately. Communication is a big part of Inside Out and will hopefully open up a door for you and your little ones to talk about feelings and emotions more freely and regularly.
Wonder
Wonder is a moving movie for parents and children to watch together. It shows Auggie’s relationship with his parents in a positive light and promotes a supportive and loving environment. The topic of bullying is a big aspect of this movie as the main character experiences being bullied when going to school while having a facial difference. This film will show children the importance of empathy and teach them that bullying is never acceptable.
Bridge To Terabithia
The topics of loss and grief are explored in this 2007 movie. While this film will definitely bring a tear to your eye, it’s an important one to show children who may have gone through the loss of a loved one or to just prepare them for when they may experience grief one day. While bravery, friendship and imagination are important topics throughout, there is no escaping the important lesson of how to deal with loss and tragedy.
Pocahontas
A Disney classic that will open the eyes of young children to tolerance and acceptance. The worlds of Native American and European people are shown to highlight the importance of cultural understanding. Through song and beautiful animation, Pocahontas teaches children about understanding people’s differences and accepting other cultures while ending on a peaceful note.
The Incredibles
This film demonstrates the importance of teamwork, responsibility and communication. The movie shows how the family must work together to come to a resolution, while also appreciating everybody’s individual talents. A wonderful movie for the whole family to be reminded that individualism and ‘small wins’ should always be celebrated.
