They have been preparing all year for their First Holy Communion, so when the big day finally does come around you want it to be special. However, if you aren’t careful, you can end up spending hundreds, even thousands on the day.

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to keep the cost down, without sacrificing anything on the day.

1. Purchase their dress from a high street store

With so many high street stores selling their own communion dresses and suits, there is no need to spend hundreds on an outfit. Debenhams, Next and Monsoon has some gorgeous styles for both boys and girls that are perfect for the big day.

2. Pair back the accessories for your daughter

Does your child really need a bag, gloves, umbrella and veil? Why not allow them to choose one accessory and leave it at that. You can also pick up some nice white clips or fake flowers to put in their hair to save you buying a veil.

3. Borrow from family and friends

There is absolutely nothing wrong with borrowing a pre-worn dress or suit for your child. They will really only be wearing it for the photos and are likely to take it off as soon as they get home. If they aren’t keen on wearing an outfit worn by someone else, just don’t tell them where you got it...

4. Have a small gathering at home

Many people can go all out for the party after the church, which can cost hundreds depending on how many people are invited. To keep it cheap and cheerful, just invite a few close family members and friends back to your house and serve sandwiches and mini pizzas. You can always ask each guest to bring one dish whether it’s dessert or salads to keep it even easier. Pop a movie on for the kids and sit back and relax – your child is bound to enjoy this more anyway than sitting in a restaurant.

5. Wear what you already have

Of course you want to look your best on the day but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear a dress that you already have. Why not go get your hair done instead or even your make-up, these things cost a lot less than a new outfit and can actually make you feel better.
