If like us, the car is an extension of your home, you will certainly be home for Christmas! The journeys we make over the holidays will be filled with family fun- as well as some family craziness! We’ve come up with 7 things that are bound to happen while travelling with kids, to get you through this festive season!

“Are we there yet”
This happens immediately. They know that you are nowhere near your destination. They are aware that it takes longer than five minutes to get there. But logic disappears in confined spaces, and the question will be repeated until you give them the answer they are looking for!

Hunger Pains
Snacks are a must because hanger is real for toddlers! Even if you know they are not actually ‘starving’, best to be prepared to avoid hours of whinging and whining. Avoid popcorn and rice cakes to prevent the back seat turning into a winter wonderland!

DJ Mum
You have the aux cable, but you don’t have the power. If there is a particular soundtrack you can tolerate for more than an hour, cling to it. Accept that you will be playing the part of Elsa or Moana at some point - it will be good practice for your Christmas party piece at the in-laws!

Empty threats
You might have memories of your own mum threatening to “turn this car around”, when things get out of hand in the back-seat. You know you’d never do it, not after all the effort it took to pack the car, not to mention organising the trip.  But, you’ve joined the mum-club and thus have rights to use this legendary threat. Avail of these rights before the kids realise the threat is empty!

Toilet Trips
“I need to wee” will happen. You can do your mummy-best to avoid it by waiting ‘til the very last minute to empty all bladders before you embark on the journey. Nonetheless, there is always at least one who will suddenly proclaim they are bursting. False alarms might occur and often you are in a position where the only loo available is made of grass. I have a toddler who enjoys the natural way and will wait until there is no sign of civilisation before announce she has to go!

The “dropped toy”
We’ve put a ban on any toys tiny enough to get stuck under car seats. At some point, your little trouble makers will lose something precious in the back of the car. You can say a silent prayer that it will be in arms reach, but nine times out of ten you'll have to pull over to retrieve it, there's just no avoiding it, it's either that or the dreaded meltdown!

You will milk the “Santa’s watching” threats!
Its one of the many gifts bestowed upon us parents by the festive season. You, for a full two months -or three if your desperate - can hand the burden of discipline and judgement over to ole' Saint Nick. They actually listen to this threat. It’s short lived so milk it while you can!

Good Luck over the holidays, mums, and drive safely!
