The parents of Alfie Evans will meet with doctors today to discuss taking their 23-month-old son home.

His parents, Tom Evans and Kate James, recently lost their second appeal to bring their son to Rome for treatment.

Since the second court ruling, the parents are now focused on bringing their boy home. They shared that they will meet with their son’s doctors today to discuss taking him home. Alfie is currently at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Alfie has been in a coma for over a year after he contracted a mystery illness. Doctors say the young boy is in a semi-vegetative state and has a degenerative neurological condition that doctors have struggled to diagnose.

Alfie’s dad, Tom Evans told reporters that there was no deterioration in his son’s health since the ventilator was switched off.

He explained that his boy was content and his heart rate was stable.

"He hasn't woke up, he's still a little bit weak but what we ask for is to go home to sustain his life,” he added.

The court does not approve of taking the toddler to Rome, but they have agreed that bringing Alfie home is an acceptable move.

His ventilator support was removed on Monday, but the toddler has continued to breathe by himself since then.

Alfie’s case has gained huge attention from the media and public. Pope Francis tweeted about the case after Alfie’s dad visited him and begged for his help.

He wrote, “Moved by the prayers and immense solidarity shown little Alfie Evans, I renew my appeal that the suffering of his parents may be heard and that their desire to seek new forms of treatment may be granted.”
